When I started my business, the best advice I received was from a bank manager.

He told me bluntly “If you want to make your business succeed, the first thing you need is not an office, or furniture or employees. What you need is a customer.”

Sadly, many entrepreneurs got engaged in activities that make the business look and feel like a real business. For example: legal, accounting, operations.

These functions are important, but without marketing, you will not have sales and without sales, you will not have cash flow and without cash flow, you will not be able to pay for all the other functions (except by going into debt).

You need to bring cash flow to keep your business growing. Without marketing and sales, it is very hard to continue your business.

I have seen many entrepreneurs who are deeply passionate about their products but consider selling as a low profile job. They don’t think selling is their primary task.

They should never forget that without selling they can’t pay their bills.

That’s why the one role you should not give up as your business grows – is to be incharge of marketing and selling your products.

A lot more businesses go broke not because they don’t have managers and executives… not because they don’t have computers and desks… they failed because they don’t have enough sales.

So why not work on first thing first?
