If you are in sales, business or leadership, there are four capabilities I believe deserve continuous practice.
1. Influence
Can you move people toward a decision without manipulating them?
Can you communicate ideas in a way that creates genuine interest?
Can you earn attention and credibility?
Influence becomes particularly important when customers have more choices and less willingness to act.
2. Persuasion
Can you help someone understand the value of your solution?
Can you change a customer’s perspective?
Can you communicate benefits in terms that matter to them?
Persuasion isn’t about forcing someone to say yes.
It’s about helping people make decisions with greater clarity and confidence.
3. Negotiation
Can you protect your price without immediately offering a discount?
Can you understand what the other side truly values?
Can you create agreements where both parties see value?
When markets become challenging, negotiation skills can directly affect profitability.
4. Closing Deals
Can you convert an opportunity into a decision?
Can you identify why a customer is hesitating?
Can you handle uncertainty?
Can you move the conversation forward without creating unnecessary pressure?
Because ultimately, business doesn’t grow from conversations alone.
It grows from decisions.
Keep training.
