Dear Reader,

Recessions come and go.

Companies struggle. Jobs disappear. Clients reduce spending. Businesses face uncertainty.

But some professionals remain remarkably resilient.

What makes them different?

They continuously train themselves.

There is a big difference between self-learning and self-training.

Self-learning means acquiring knowledge.
Self-training means practising a skill until you can perform it consistently.

You can read 100 books about negotiation and still be a poor negotiator.

You can watch hundreds of sales videos and still struggle to close a deal.

Knowledge tells you what to do.

Training helps you actually do it.

In difficult markets, this distinction becomes critical.

When opportunities become scarce, companies value people who can create opportunities, influence customers, negotiate effectively and close business.

That’s why I believe every sales professional should continuously self-train in four areas:

Influence. Persuasion. Negotiation. Closing.

You cannot control the economy.

You cannot control recessions.

You cannot control competitors.

But you can control how valuable you become.

Recessions may change your environment. Your skills can change your ability to survive it.

So don’t just keep learning.

Keep training.
