I’m a big fan of the industrialist Henry Ford.
Ford wasn’t interested in just making another luxury automobile that only rich people could afford. He wanted to sell an automobile that an average person could buy and use.
Born in a farmer’s family, Henry Ford didn’t know anything about the automobile and how to run a business until he started working as an Engineer in the Edison Electric Illuminating Company.
Later, when he started manufacturing automobiles, he constantly wanted to improve his automobiles instead of putting them to market.
His genius was taking existing ideas and making them radically better.
Before building his famous Model T, Henry Ford conducted extensive research on who would buy it, how much they could afford to pay, and what they would want and need in a car.
By the time the Model T was introduced, Ford already knew he had a large market of potential buyers, what features would make the buy, and what to charge them.
Ford believed in offering his customers solutions to problems they didn’t even know they had.
One of his famous quotes was:
“If I had simply asked people what they wanted, they would have asked me for faster horses!”
If you’re an entrepreneur, a marketer, a product developer, you need to memorize this quote forever.
Remember, knowing your target market goes much deeper than simply knowing what they say they want.
Many times, people don’t even know what they want. And if they have the slightest idea they don’t know how to express.
It’s our job to find out the hidden motivations of our target market so that we can come up with the most suitable products and services and present them effectively to our prospects.
And it’s not just about creating the right products and services…
We need to keep testing which offers work best for our market.
What to say and what not to say that could turn NOs into YESes.
What changes need to be done in our environment, communication, body language, and techniques that could influence our customer’s behaviour.
