Dear Reader,
A growing chorus of economists and financial experts predict some countries are heading into a recession.
Not sure if it would affect us or not. And if yes, how serious it could be.
We have seen how past recessions have been marked by widespread layoffs and bankruptcies.
So if this recession is really coming, it’s possible that many businesses may get affected.
It’s possible that some companies may even file for bankruptcy.
It’s possible that some Brick-and-Mortar businesses may even shut down forever.
And it’s possible that some people may start losing jobs. And some self-employed professionals may lose clients. It could be hit hard on them as generally, these professionals don’t get any fixed salary. Besides, they don’t get any employment/unemployment benefits.
So there is a chance that recession could hit most of us professionally and even personally.
It’s what we have seen before and it’s what we may see again if things go unwell.
But there is a group of people that are least affected by the recession. In fact, they are hardly ever bothered by recessions, calamities, pandemics, disruptive technologies, seasonal changes, and political turmoil.
Who are these non-affected people?
Why are they immune to acts of God, science, and humans?
What makes them stay calm while listening to bad news?
The answer lies in one trait they have developed for years. They invested heavily in this trait and keep reaping the fruits of their investments.
So, what is this trait which has made them immortal in recessions?
How this trait always shields them from outside negative influence?
And what makes this trait so powerful that people who are having this trait not only survive the recession, in fact, they thrive in it.
I call this trait Self-training.
No, it’s not Self-learning. Self-training is different from Self-learning.
Self-learning means gathering knowledge on whatever thing you are interested in. Nobody is forcing you to learn. It’s your own wish to learn to satisfy your never-ending curiosity.
And self-training means regularly practicing a skill-set. Nobody is forcing you to practice. It’s your wish to train yourself to become good in that skill-set.
Let’s understand this concept with an example.
Suppose you have an interest in martial arts. You start learning about this art. You read all the history about it. You read biographies of famous martial artists. You gain so much knowledge about martial arts that you can challenge anybody for debate. This is an example of self-learning where you want to know everything about martial arts for your own sake. Nobody has forced you to learn about it.
Now suppose, one of your friends is also interested in martial arts. But she takes a different approach. Instead of gaining all the knowledge of martial arts, she starts training herself in it. She buys books, videos, and whatever good courses are available on martial arts. But she doesn’t stop here. She starts practicing techniques bit by bit every day. Nobody has forced her to train herself in martial arts. It’s her own desire.
Now here comes the difference. If you’re allowed to talk about martial arts in a martial art school, you may beat everybody in the room in terms of knowledge. But when it comes to physical contests with martial art students, you may lose to even the weakest opponent.
Whereas your friend… who might not be as brilliant as you… who might not be as knowledgeable as you… who might not be as smart as you… becomes so good in a few techniques, that nobody in that martial arts school can beat her in fights.
This is the difference between self-learning and self-training.
This applies in the world of business too.
I have seen some great self-learners who are very smart and knowledgeable. They know everything about the business, industry, and global conditions.
And I have also seen some great self-trainers who are just sharpening their skill-sets to increase their income. They may miss the important news and updates… but never miss the opportunity to beat their competitors, no matter how small or big they are.
The point is when it comes to mastering influence, persuasion, negotiation, and closing skills, it’s better to become a self-trainer instead of a self-learner if you want to survive and thrive in any kind of recession.
Recessions will come and go. Calamities will come and go. Pandemics will come and go. Disruptive technologies will come and go. But your skill-set will never leave you.
So if you love self-training, my premium guides are designed for you.
